Erica is the founder of Teachers@Play.  She holds a Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education with an academic major in English; a Masters Degree in Reading Specialization; a Masters Degree in Educational Administration with a focus on School Business Administration from Kean University.  She is currently pursuing her PhD in Education with a focus on Literacy Studies from Rutgers University.  Her dissertation research focus is on teacher-gamers and their videogame literacy practices–specifically, how these out-of-school activities impact their pedagogy.

Erica began Teachers@Play because, as a gamer herself, she understands how gaming can influence education for the better!  As the Assistant Director of the Kean University Writing Project, Erica has been working with teachers for many years.  While she thoroughly enjoys this work, she also wanted to expand her instructional professional development horizons, sharing her expertise specifically focused on technology training and game based learning pedagogy.

Erica has taught “Web-Based Multimedia Design for Educators” a graduate level online course offered through Rutgers University for more than six semesters; this course is specifically geared towards teaching teachers how to utilize Web 2.0 technologies including, but not limited to, wikis, websites, podcasts, screencasts, social media, edited videos, etc.  Some of Erica’s students mentioned to her that they wished they had someone who could instruct them on an individual basis in a face-to-face environment so that they could better learn some of the tools and concepts that were presented in the course.  This notion had Erica thinking about how she could better assist teachers in a more focused way, which led to the development of Teachers@Play.

Erica looks forward to being able to provide individual teachers with personal technology tutoring, small group instruction (if multiple teachers want to get together and learn a similar Web 2.0 tool), as well as larger professional development offerings, such as school and district PD workshop offerings, or even game course offerings for your students taught by Erica herself!
